When I started wearing makeup as a teenager it wasn’t anything like it is today – first of all – if you are anywhere near my age I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is blue?!?! Yeah – I just remember lots of blue…and pink (coupled with Aqua-Net for the hair, of course!?). There were no certainly no Kardashians and obviously no YouTube. As far as I know there were no Ulta or Sephora type stores and I don’t think we had all the luxury brands that we have today? What I do remember were magazine tutorials bragging about how fast you could do your make-up, do your make-up in under “X” minutes – quick make-up application is how I remember it!
Sure, I’ve made more of an effort with my makeup here and there over the years, but the last few years my makeup routine lately has been pretty simple – I mean really simple – like foundation, black liner/mascara and lipstick (OK – it’s actually lip stain – because I’m only putting that on one time per day!) kind of really simple.
I took an awesome class from Denise Birdsong of Modern Love Photography (she’s awesome!) in the bay area this spring, which included several lessons on make-up. Being a good student I headed to both Ulta and Sephora and purchased many of the recommended products. I’ll be honest here, most were make-up companies I’d never really even heard of, since, up until now, my makeup has come out of the discount aisles of Target. I was such a “good student” I even became a VIP at Sephora in one weekend!! However, as a not so good student though, everything remained, neat and tidy, in it’s little boxes, inside the shopping bag for months. On a side note, all this new, gorgeous make -up just sitting unused was a great upset to my teenage daughter.
I purchased Urban Decay, Tarte, Kat Von D, Smashbox, Benefit, Nars, Too Faced and Laura Mercier. I now have makeup with names like Naked, Give Me Brow, Orgasm, Yes-They’re real, and Better than Sex! Although, I must say, that as a boudoir photographer, I do think the names are a lot of fun!!
I’m now trying to teach myself how to actually apply this stuff – but to still be able to do it all in under 5 minutes!! I seriously just don’t have the attention span for the dedication and time everyone else spends doing it! Yeah – for now, I’m still feeling a bit lazy with the new look, but it IS at least 100% better than what I WAS doing. While I think I’m doing a fairly bang up job so far, my 18 year old daughter does not necessarily agree with that claim!! She asked how I did my eyes the other day so I told her one color on top one color on the inside bottom, one on the outside bottom and one in the crease. While she did admit they looked “okay” she added that my description (which included hand movements to demonstrate!) made no sense and I still needed help! And yes, I do tend to follow the cute little pictures on the back of the box, despite the fact that every makeup artist, ever, has told me not to do that!! I just feel like they took the time and energy to make and attach those pictures, they should be given some attention. I’m definitely still a work in progress at this point, but I am working at it and I’m sure there will be many more tales of my transformation and progress as I go along.
